Good food is so important in a successful hiking or backpacking trip. Your body not only requires the water and electrolytes, but other sources of energy to keep itself going to stay warm and cool. By good food, I mean foods that provide the components that it needs such as: carbohydrates, grains, fruits.

Take some time to choose snacks and meals that contain these important components. They don't have to be fancy meals or even hot meals. Sometimes in the summer I will fix cold meals.

You certainly don't want to overload yourself with carrying food, but on the other hand you might need more than you think you will need. You work up an appetite outside and your body can burn its fuel quickly.

If you're unsure of the types of food or quantity, then prepare and fix the meals you would be eating on your trip ahead of time. That way you know how much you will need, if you're going to like the food and if it's nutritious enough.

There are numerous books and magazines that can provide ideas on meals and the specifics your body needs. Outdoor recreation stores and the Internet are also great sources of information.
